Ultra modern Facilities, been to other universities and 6 out of the 8 i've been to in London are old buildings. Student support from Careers network and LSU is superb. Academic writing, CVs and Cover Letters for jobs. Volunteering roles on campus to build CV as well. I think the night life can be improved, and i thing they introduced an international student night so we getting there. So much focus on learning here it really sucks the life out of you but there's groups and fun stuff to do as well outside of sports i mean.
We could use more online modules. And timetables are packed sometimes, really gives u no time for anything else cause on the weekend you need to be doing on assessment or prepping with a group for your presentation or doing some research work. It gets boring sometimes but quality of teaching is definitely top notch. Tutors make time when u need extra assistance except for one part time lecturer who made it clear he didnt have much time outside of class hours to offer so we were limited in that regard. Library is super stocked, online catalogues are up to date, personal tutors guide through the course and other student activities. Mental health support for persons struggling as well. The aim is to be well rounded and i think my faculty does their best in that regard except the packed timetable
It great while uni is in session, not so much doing recesss or vacation.
I love the campus environment and being surrounded by a wealth of activities and opportunities at all times right on my doorstep
the course is fully in person taught by research leaders who are passionate about their subject and they liase directly with industry professionals to make sure the content is up to date and relevant
its a safe place that isn't as busy as city universities but great travel links to all the major UK hubs
I loved my halls experience supported by the staff (warden and housekeeping team) and older students (returners and committee) from the day I moved in all the way through till the end of first year exams
Love the uni! I don't like the drip feeding on the course
Great facilities! Good teaching and excellent support for placements - we don't use the facilities much though
Comfy beds
The best thing about Loughborough is that the her is so much things you can get involved with. You can play every sport you can think of and there are amazing sports facilities. As everything is within the campus it’s really convenient to move around and you can walk pretty much everywhere. One thing that I would say I don’t like about Loughborough University is that if you live on campus you have to walk 15-30 mins to town weekly to buy groceries as there isn’t much shops on campus.
My course is interesting and engaging. I like reading the required reading as some of them are genuinely interesting. The course really encourages you to think critically and teaches you to evaluate arguments and analyse data. However, I think the course would benefit from the implementation of more practical tasks and assignments which allow you to work with media companies and get involved in and contribute to projects with real impact.
I really like living in a hall of residence on campus. It’s really convenient as it’s right next to my lectures and is an easy way to make friends outside your course. Also, there are a lot of fun events organised in the hall and you can get involved in the hall committee which is a great way to get experience and bond with people from your hall :)
the sports facilities are amazing and the campus has lots of beautiful places to study
library is good for course books, and there are some very enthusiastic lecturers
its a lovely quaint town, however the university is very much the main aspect of this location. If you are suited to a city lifestyle, you may find loughborough to be quiet and small. However, the size of the town is easy to look past when the university campus has something for everyone, and lots of things to do which are student centred.
my particular flat is perfect, however there is some variation between the facilities and appliances in other kitchens. my room is perfect and the cleaning is very very well done by lovely people
Best: being on hall committee and having responsibility and opportunity to organise events for halls. Bad: gym isn’t 24 hours and would be good if it was open earlier and later for students
My course is very current with changing technologies and methods of doing things. We learn various industry software and most of our briefs are centred around real world and future events. Bad: limited workshop time, which makes the course less hands on than I would prefer.
Best: hall committee and being able to organise events and build on my CV. Very good community in halls best I’ve seen out of other halls. Hall management are friendly and help deal with issues I have: Bad: WiFi connection is very intermittent and sometimes disconnects.
Everyone is so friendly here fit in very easily
The course is well organised and the lecturers are always there to help.
It so convenient for me and I don’t have to worry about my meals
I've found the mental wellbeing team here is amazing, offering tutorials, workshops and 1 to 1 sessions that have helped find the support I need. The campus is the perfect balance of town and nature, and the surrounding area is accessible with the buses. The only downside is that the bus service can be unreliable, so it's not ideal if you struggle walking long distances and I would recommend keeping that in mind for when choosing an accommodation.
My course involves minimum 12hours a week of lectures, with the learn page provided all the modules allow you to download lecture materials such as PowerPoint, assessment guides, coursework guides, module information etc. Of course who you prefer teaching you is entirely based on your own learning style, but I find in particular Dr Matt Long to be incredible, with his attitude and encouragement to engage in the topics and his overall charisma it makes learning more fun and I find myself actively ensuring I don't miss his lectures. The research modules on quantitative and qualitative research methods can be draining, especially if you are more interested in learning about more specific things like the CJS, prisons, sociology and psychology involved with criminology, but overall they provide useful information that will help when doing your own dissertation. With this subject being part of the school of social sciences and humanities there is an option to take a language module, you do not have to be fluent to take it, and it's useful if you think you may want to take your studies abroad in the future in a placement or study exchange.
Location wise it's great if you're an engineering student, taking biology or archeology. It's not too far away from East Park, and with it being right next to the library it is handy for exam season and if you run late to a lecture you can get lucky and catch a bus (which are free on campus). The WiFi isn't amazing, which is an experience across all halls, but it's not terrible. It's located near some shops such as spar, sunny express and forest road post office. If you're walking back from a night out either at the SU or town then Papa Si's is an amazing takeaway and you will be tempted to buy food from it. Accommodation kitchens are a hit or miss, in A block the top rooms share a kitchen that is basically a corridor, making cooking with friends difficult. Whereas, lower down kitchens in the tower blocks are bigger, but only one or two have seating areas. The upkeep of the kitchens is also entirely dependant on who you share it with. Also there are no lifts in the tower blocks (a, b, c) so if this is a problem for you I would advise putting it in your application notes for Accommodation. The cleaning service ladies are really friendly but are not scared to discipline you if you leave messes in the kitchen. Sharing a toilet is fine depending on where you are located too, with a lot of the tower blocks the toilets and showers are in one room together as cubicles which can get awkward. This is less of a problem in d or e block, and f block has an ensuite, but that does make your room a bit smaller obviously. Catering is good when it comes to breakfast, offering a full English, pastries, serial, toast etc but dinner can be good or bad. Depending on the time you go to dinner will also affect what food is available to you as well so keep that in mind.
Loughborough is a great community with loads of brilliant clubs and societies to get involved with. The town itself is small and doesn’t have much to do but the campus is large and filled with something for everyone. The physics course is intensive but gives the skills that opens the door to lots of different jobs in the future. The lecturers are in majority very good and look like they care about what they’re teaching. There are also brilliant facilities for students to get help and catch up if they needed to.
The course is done entirely in class. We have no online lectures however you are expected to do work outside of class and read around the subject to get the most out of the course. We have a lot of contact hours during the week but these means a lot less reading time out of the class which is a benefit to the long weeks. We have lots of contact with lecturers and tutors if wanted. They have open door policy with their offices so any questions can be answered almost immediately aswell as having Microsoft teams groups to answer any others. Overall it is a great course.
The halls are great for engineers and STEM students as they are a 5 minute walk from lectures and with the catering it allows a lot more free time and ease for everyone. The hall itself is a bit older and doesn’t follow the typical uni halls system of flats but the community is great and the people in the hall are brilliant. There is a real sense of community in the hall and the issue of the older buildings is being fixed as there have been renovations to some of the rooms (Common room)
As a Mechanical Engineering student, the staff try to make the course as fun as possible through competition with students.
Contact with lectures is made easy through Teams and emails.
A great place to leave for a engineering student as the engineering school is right across the road, literally!!
The largest university awards in the UK voted for exclusively by students - find out which unis our student reviewers love!
Other students also liked these unis - you might too!
There are a lot of good and positive things to share about.
