We don't have a complete university campus which makes me feel so pity.
What makes me feel warm is that my professors and classmates care about me from many different aspects.
Too much stuff requires going through online platforms which aren’t very functional and you can never speak to someone in person or book a physical appointment to see anyone
Too many watch at home lectures which are really hard to focus on because you’re just staring at a PowerPoint
Wayyy too many people to a very tiny laundry room and the laundry room was always dirty and the washing machines weren’t very good at washing anything, also really overpriced laundry. Not much ventilation which means rooms can overheat a lot. Not a lot of daylight gets in. Nice kitchen and appliances and good wifi in rooms but virtually none in the kitchen and no signal in the building so can’t make or receive phone calls or texts inside.
My course is great but I’m unhappy with the societies I’ve joined
All of the lectures are interesting but some of the lecturers go too fast/ slow
The student union is a great relief for me as an international student and I've found it really helpful in many occasions. I don't find anything unappealing till now but one thing I would look forward to have is more cultural festivals as I'm feeling very much homesick
The course in overall is executed excellently but I have found it overwhelming as I'm kinda clueless as my previous education system is entirely different from one in here and I'm trying to adapt with this system.
All great ! Apart from the lack of listening to students about student nights and Wednesdays. This was overlooked and poor.
Good
Great !
Great uni. constantly asking for feedback.
Very mixed. Some lecturers are great and I thoroughly enjoy some modules. Other lecturers have learnt english as a second language and it is very difficult to understand them. Most of us end up teaching ourselves the content outselves as attending lectures is pointless and listening to videos you don't undestand is pointless. This has happened to multiple modules in multiple years. Career prospects for Medical Engineers in particular is limited and career fairs are small. The modules soley for Medical Engineers are limited and often we are just put with other engineers (electrial or mechanical) and as we are the minority, lecturers often don't refer to us and only include examples for the other engineering type. For electronics for example, it was assumed that we knew a lot more than we actually do because the other electronic engineers have a broader understanding of physics than us.
At Cardiff University, students benefit from fantastic support networks, including approachable staff and supportive peers who make navigating university life a breeze. The new campus at Heath Park West is not only beautiful but also conveniently located. While there's no direct essay supervision, the university provides ample resources such as study sessions and exemplars to aid students in their academic journey, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way
The course is taught primarily in the classroom, however some days are online, which helps keeping the travel expenses down! Lectures are easily contactable and very helpful to provide feedback from essays and pointers to help the next experience. The library offers skills sessions to help with research and the disability department is fantastic supporting with any learning difficulties students may have,
The new CSL building is a great addition and looks visually appealing. There are lots of different study areas some of which are 24/7 access . Some of the buildings have nice facillities and look lovely, other buildings are horrible to look at and look dreary and depressing and you wouldn't want to spend £9k a year to go to these buildings, especially when they are around the main Uni area. The teaching can be hit and miss, some lecturers are really enthusiastic about what they are teaching and make it fun to learn about, others can be monotone and don't seem interested in their own work. The uni offer a range of activities for students to take part in and offer a lot to their students. Events like 'Feed your flat' or 'Period Dignity' or 'Revision Aid' are really good pop up stands that are really beneficial to students. I think the students union is probably one of the best parts to the uni and I'll miss that when I graduate. In terms of support, I think it has a lot of room for improvement. I am very fortunate to not need the support that some students require, but even those who require it struggle to receive that support. Whilst there are systems in place to help students it seems like the bare minimum. They have a wellbeing team, disability support ect. but the way situations are handled feels like the Uni doesn't truly care for its students. If I've ever had a problem my tutor has been great with advice and support, whereas some students might not want to talk to their tutor and reach out to the uni support team. There have been cases where a student in Uni accommodation attempted to take their own life and the uni had only sent them an email to offer an optional drop in session rather than implement something more serious, another student had been on a waiting list for therapy through the uni for 8 months, and another student didn't get the disability support that seemed necessary. So whilst the overall experience at Cardiff is great and I have had a nice time, I think students who are in a position where they require external help, it's not that great.
Despite first term of first year (because of COVID), all of our teaching has been in person. The content has been great in 2nd and 3rd year and I have loved what I've learnt about. Depending on the lecturer, some of them are really enthusiastic about what they teach and makes learning even better. My course seems to offer good facilities, its great for those wanting to do anatomy as its one of the few Unis that offer an anatomy lab with cadavers. There are occasional arranged tutor meetings but my tutor has been great in the sense that if I need to meet with her she will try and see me within that week ( depending on its importance). The downside is, firstly the course isn't accredited which could be beneficial to have, there doesn't seem a lot of placements or internship for Biomed students, however I have seen lots for Biochem. Lastly, the careers advisors have a specific department for Biosciences and they have been really helpful, however I still dont know what career options I have
The building was outdated, when compared to other Uni halls Cardiff has a lot to catch up with. The Talybont accommodation is the main accommodation and 2 out of the 4 locations (Central & Gate) are new. The facilities were basic, and i think all were ensuite wet rooms. I think I was paying £115 a week which was more affordable than other Uni's but it also had an outdated style. There were also massive issues with silverfish as of the wet rooms and we lived next to a river so the bottom floor flats had infestations. Usually, if you kept the wet room dry and aired/ wiped it down after a shower it was okay. I had issues with leaks that were fixed the next day but maintenance were always good and if it was an emergency they would come the same day. The location was 20 minute walk from uni and 40 minutes to town, however it had a retail park close by for students to get their things from Tesco, Aldi, Greggs, B&M, Mcdonalds and last year a Pure Gym opened up. Opposite the accommodation is Bute park which is great so besides being 40 minutes to town it is in a great area. The safety was fine, you could only drive in if you had a card registered to the car park or if you had a specific room number of the person you were visiting. All buildings, flats and rooms were registered to a key card so safety wasn't a massive concern. Anyone could walk into the area as the gates in the middle of the residence area were often left open ( the main entrances where cars would get into were closed but between Taly North & South the pedestrian gates were open but the space between these accommodation meant members of the public could get in if they wanted). However, there were always security guards walking around.
There are a great range of societies to join so there is something for everyone. The Students Union has a number of excellent facilities, shops and food outlets. The teaching staff are very helpful and friendly and the campus is lovely. Cardiff is a very nice city with so much to do, and I have always felt safe here. It could be improved by some of the facilities being upgraded as some are a bit outdated.
The number of contact hours suit my learning style well as I enjoy working independently. The course is very interesting and the teaching staff are helpful and approachable. The seminars are especially helpful to consolidate my knowledge. It could be improved by offering more opportunities to get feedback on my work, and more examples of high grade work from previous students so I know how to approach a question.
Although the rooms here are quite small, I really enjoyed my time here and quickly got used to the size - I could fit way more into my bedroom that I initially thought! I felt very safe as there was an on site security team. The location is great as it is right next to Tesco Extra, McDonald's, KFC, Greggs, Aldi, B&M and PureGym, among other things. The reception team are very helpful. I play netball, and my bedroom was opposite the netball courts which was very helpful for attending training, The kitchen is nice and modern, and this accommodation is good value for money. The internet worked well, there was a good heating system, and we had a cleaner once a week to clean communal areas.
Drinking culture is good. Over policed in places. People learn from experience, the stricter you are the more rebellious the behaviour is.
I have roughly 6 hours in contact a week. Bit of a joke
Not a clean place. Lots of silverfish
