It does very well as i am constantly getting emails for apprenticeships and can have opportunities to study abroad.

The uni’s facilities are really good. Lots of computers dotted about the place as well as study spaces where you can work on your laptop. There’s a nice cafe on campus which is a little pricey but has a varied daily menu for hot food. The library has a great selection of physical/e-books but my favourite feature is its study rooms which you can book out and are great for bouncing ideas around or working. The campus is a little clinical in its design — mostly just computer rooms — which doesn’t feel very artsy, but it’s obvious that a lot of money has been put into the place and depending on where you are on campus, you can sometimes get great views of the sea! Student support could be improved. I feel as though there maybe aren’t enough members of staff to accommodate everyone swiftly and have at times felt like I’d been forgotten when raising queries. In terms of what’s contained within the uni itself, student life is a little lacking. There’s no student union bar or anything like that and there haven’t been many events so far. However, that’s not really a problem because Swansea itself is a great place to live as a student. Basically whatever type of night-out (clubs, bars, pubs, etc.) you want is an option. There’s also a ton of cool coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, charity/vintage clothes shops and obviously there’s the beach which is surprisingly nice.

I’m really enjoying the course so far. The lecturers are all engaging in their own way and each bring something unique to the course. Instead of just being a run-of-the-mill film studies course, we’re invited to consider elements of philosophy, art, psychology, etc. in our creative practise. My only issue with the content is that - particularly when it comes to the theoretical side of the course - we’re not given much guidance academically. University is obviously a place where independent study is expected but it would be really helpful to have a little bit more of a scholarly presence in lectures pertaining to theory as a jumping off point for us to go and do our own research for essays. In terms of contact hours, I’m finding that we’re in a little too often. It’s been difficult for me to find the time for independent study due to how many lectures and workshops we have in the week. Apparently contact hours will be reduced in the second semester, though, which should make this issue go away. Career prospects are a tricky one with media degrees. It’s a very competitive industry so you’re not going to walk into your dream job off the back off this degree but I genuinely believe that we’re learning great skills that we will need when it comes to getting our foot in the door, but ultimately that’s down to you. As far as I know, there aren’t any work placements or internships organised by the course. Instead, you’re encouraged to apply for work placements in your own time. Facilities are good overall. We have access to a great range of equipment which can be booked out for productions. What would make the course even better would be having a studio. Even just a small set where we could film would be a massive step-up. On another note, I’d love for there to be more collaboration between different courses. It’d be great to have a joint module with some photography, music tech, or set design students for example. The uni does have a great open door policy where it’s possible for students to audit lectures for other courses and I’m surprised this isn’t advertised more because I think a lot of student would find this really beneficial for their creative practice.
