Overall my university experience has been a mixed bag, in some aspects I love it and it's perfect, in other aspects, I wonder why some students are at university. I feel a large portion of people are just drifting through university and not really willing to be proactive in workshops, classes and group work. Usually in a workshop of 40 people 1 or 2 people will engage with the tutor/lecturer, despite the fact that the lecturer/tutors are really engaging. Strathclyde does not interview students before admitting them into university and I feel that this will be a really good thing for Strathclyde. They need to up the quality of students coming in, to more proactive students, because there are some genuinely quality students who are really proactive and want to do well, but too many people are there for a doss.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Strathclyde is doing a £1billion referbishment of campus, so we have state of the art technological facilities all over campus as well as the historical royal college building incase we feel like having a blast from the past. Most of campus is technologically advanced and very environmentally friendly (we have solar panels) and we also have a bran new multi million pound sport centre. There are also facilities for societies, entrepreneurs, and scientists/engineers to use in order to do projects. e.g. formula 1 workshop
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I think that it all depends on an individual basis. For me personally, I think that you have the opportunity to develop relationships with the staff which is what I believe a good education system is like. The feedback is usually harsh but fair. The academic side is great. My problem is with the more personal services. Although there are lots of services such as the career service and counciling, these are the services heavily letting down the university. The career service is pretty unhelpful. The advice is far too generic and I can't take the staff seriously, these feelings resonates with many of my peers who tell me the same thing. The career service needs people with real industry knowledge who can bring in good companies. Most of the good companies who have come in are directly through professor/lecturer contacts and not the career service. They are bad at bringing in quality companies/firms with good speakers. They are also not up to date with what is going on in the industry and providing good free resources to use. For instance, the lack of Situational Judgement Tests that you need to know for company applications.
Additionally, I have worked for the university multiple times and the admin departments are pretty bad. Particularly for registering international students. They refuse to hire more staff when that is clearly what is needed. It got so bad this year students were queuing for hours and then getting sent away. These are students who are paying on average £20k to study at the university and the team was completely understaffed throughout the whole process. This is despite this problem constantly occurring every year. International students have a nightmarish experience of registering at this university and it's unacceptable.
Strathclyde is perfect in all senses except for personal services and admissions.
We have a great finance team and good personal advice facilities to help students. But things like counciling which have long wait times are pretty bad.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Our student union is perfect. It is so active and there are many facilities from rooms and areas to study, eat lunch and hangout or do events. There are also bars, clubs, debate chambers and meeting rooms. A mix of practicality and personality.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
It's excellently located in Glasgow, as central as you can get. It is close to lots of bars, restaurants, offices and many accomodations. There is also the large university sports centre which is state of the art.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are so many quality clubs and societies that the biggest problem is finding time to do them all. You never get bored at Strathclyde and there are so many events. Extremely inclusive and very active.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
My course is extremely flexible, so I can study how I want, where I want, for as long as I want. We don't have many compulsory time, so it is up to every student to be responsible and manage their own time, and I think that's what makes Strathclyde students really desirable.
My least favourite thing is how much group work contributes to your grades. As for most people at this university the first 2/3 years of their studies don't count towards their final grade, they just do enough to pass or get an average grade. But when you are someone who is ambitious or wants to achieve high grades or needs to get certain grades for a scholarship, it becomes extremely stressful and a full time job either convincing your group to work towards a higher grade or to overall take up most of the group work to get a good grade. I feel that either the first 2/3 years shouldn't count towards your grades and group work should be measured individually or the proportion that the group work is worth is less, or they scrap the system where the first 2/3 years don't count towards your degree so that people are pressured into trying for better grades.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
21
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Our university is world class at employability. From doing compulsory professional certification like MDP, bringing in quality speakers from different companies, to regular job fairs and advertisements of career workshops, opportunities and events.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
It's extremely safe, you could say too safe. I feel like I'm in a child proof accomodation which gets annoying when it's your home.
Prime location, right in the city centre and on campus. Close to most of my classes, so it's ideal. Also has a really great view of the city.
It's pretty pricey around £800 a month for 51 weeks for a small studio. Windows are child locked so ventilation is terrible, especially when you're cooking. It is a luxury studio so it comes at a price.
