University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I loved my time at ACM - having studied there for 4 years between the age of 16 and 20, I really feel it prepared me for working out in the music industry. The tutors are incredibly inspiring and content is relevant and up to the minute. If you want to be a part of the music industry, there really isn't anywhere else you need to look!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Unparalleled facilities! As a drum student, the incredible facilities was one of the main reasons I chose ACM. You just have to visit ACM to be wowed by the range of equipment on offer for every student at ACM. Unlike any other university offering music, ACM also offers hours and hours of free room bookings every week, plus free one to one tutorials. Ive spent many hours late at night practicing and taking advantage of everything ACM had to offer me.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
ACM's student support network is amazing. I didn't have a huge amount of contact with them personally, but other students in my class did and they were helped with everything they needed from extra time in exams to extra tutorials to get them caught up on work when they fell behind. If you have any worries about the education side of the course, then get in touch with the Ed Guidance team at ACM and they can help put your mind at rest.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
As a student back in 2006, ACM did not have a students union, however they now have a thriving union, with many events and activities to support the needs of students from all areas. The union building is by the river and a lovely place to grab a cheap but tasty lunch and to network and met other like minded students.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Guildford is a student town, with around 18,000 students from all areas of the world. It has a thriving nightlife with many live venues for ACM students to play music and network with other students from other Guildford universities. If its a big night out you're after, then Guildford also has a handful of good nightclubs and bars around the town, which are reasonably priced, especially on Monday nights - student night.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
As ACM didn't have a student union when I was a student back in 2006, I don't have experience of ACM's clubs and societies first hand, but I know they now have some established sports and arts societies which are managed by the student union team. Students are able to start new societies and gain experience managing and running these during their time at ACM.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The course was really practical and was totally different to any other music education experience I've experienced. ACM tutors have a unique way of making even the less exciting subjects such as music theory, enjoyable. The tutors are all so passionate and happy to help, plus they are all working musicians, so can pass on up to the minute insight into the current and future pathway of the music industry.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
ACM really prepared me for the industry. During my time at ACM I built up my own teaching business, with the help and guidance from my tutors, got the chance to sit in on west end musical bands, play in function bands and built up a network of contacts from all areas of the music industry.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Again, at the time I was a student, ACM did not have an on-campus accommodation offering, however ACM now has some fantastic new halls of residence, plus many other awesome live-out options.
